My first birthday as a Capricorn

Well, blogosphere, thanks for all the birthday greetings. Not a single one of you checked in with even the mildest "Happy birthday, Tom". What? You didn't know it was my birthday? It's not provided here? That's no excuse.

But, don't feel bad: The Twitterverse ignored me too. Then again, even the crustier LinkedIn world chimed in with a birthday salutation...

Facebook, however, more than made up for it. From two days prior to a full week later, it was rather remarkable as scores of family and friends checked in.

I was away on business for my birthday. When I woke up in the hotel room that morning, the little red light on my Blackberry was flickering away, letting me know that friends had written birthday messages on my Wall through all hours of the night. After a quick scan of those postings, I went into the bathroom, and threw water on my face. Looking up at the mirror I could only laugh at a wet, single, very lengthy eyebrow hair that somehow had previously gone unnoticed, was now pinned halfway up my forehead. I thought for a second about snapping a picture of it, but then thought better of it (you're welcome...), and just yanked it out. Unwanted hair--those unfortunate reminders of aging. Gotta love them.

Anyway, by the time I showered and shaved, a fresh batch of greetings were showing up on my phone. I made the trip to the office, and still more greetings were arriving. Yes, there were phone calls and texts, but those are more expected. The number of postings on Facebook, though, was stunning. I received greetings from people I knew as a child, met in grade school, in high school, college, my old job, my business circles, newer friends, second cousins, more distant ones, etc. Truly humbling and flattering.

After a long day at work, I headed back to the hotel, then went across the street to the same brewery I had mentioned in a previous post and had dinner. I really don't like a fuss being made about my birthday, so was perfectly content to have a nice meal and a couple of pints. Still, I have to say that the greetings that poured in all day long were very warmly received.

It's kind of interesting: Last year at this time, I was an out of work Aquarian able to spend a nice day skiing. As a telecommuter, I hadn't been in an office on my birthday in a long time; in fact, I believe I've been skiing on a number of recent ones. This was the first time I was in an office on my birthday in probably 6 or 7 years. Still I have to say that I am in a better place on this birthday than I was last year, and it has nothing to do with my new sign. Plus, I still get to ski on weekends...

  1. Baseball talk. If Pujols ends up eventually ends up with the Yankees to whom my beloved, but star crossed Twins, have lost 12 straight playoff games....grrrrr.
